The history of Europe, which gathers information mainly form written record, begins in the Mediterranean, describes the development of its countries, proceeds with the migrations of the Celtic and Germanic peoples, moves on to the Byzantium and Vikings, and digs into the diverse past  of the feudal states of western and central Europe. There are, however, vast areas of Europe (today populated mostly by the Slavs), which have long remained outside the focus of interest. While it is true that the Slavs did join the Christian ecumene, they remained alien to the European community (Pirenne 1956, p.351). The formulation makes sense in the context of reasoning where Europeaness is identified with Christianity, and the Slavs are unknown, unwelcome intruders. Here, the purpose is not to discuss the justification of this formulation, but rather to use it to draw attention to the astonishing fact that the view of the Slavs has remained essentially unchanged for the past 1.400 years.
